Doggone affordances: Canine perception of affordances

چکیده
10 Abstract Performing any behavior requires perceiving 11 affordances—whether and how that behavior can be per12 formed. Perception of affordances exhibits action scaling— 13 choices about when to transition between two different modes 14 of behavior reflect the fit between action capabilities and en15 vironmental properties. The boundary between distances that 16 are perceived to be reachable with an arm-only reach and 17 those that are perceived to be reachable with an arm-plus18 torso reach occurs at farther distances for long-armed than 19 for short-armed people, but at the same ratio of object20 distance-to-arm length for both groups. To the extent that per21 ception of affordances is supported by detection of invariant 22 stimulation patterns, perception of a given affordance ought to 23 exhibit action scaling regardless of species. We investigated 24 the heights at which dogs chose to transition from reaching 25 with the head only to rearing (i.e., reaching with the head plus 26 torso). This transition occurred at a taller height for tall than 27 for short dogs, but at the same ratio of shoulder-height-to28 treat-height for both groups. The results demonstrate a simi29 larity in perception of affordances across species and suggest 30 that perception of affordances is supported by detection of 31 lawfully structured stimulation patterns that may be invariant 32 across species.

Iranian EFL Learners' Perception of the Efficacy of Activity Theory-based Reading Comprehension
Any language classroom is a distinctive learning context offering numerous affordances that might be perceived effectively, remain unnoticed, or even act as constraints. Therefore, exploring students' perception toward a particular method of instruction is crucial since it may produce a reliable piece of evidence for teachers to confirm or refute the effectiveness of the intended instructional ...
متن کاملAffordances and limitations of technology: Voices from EFL teachers and learners
With the developments of new technologies appearing very quickly, the attention has been focused more on technology than learning. English centers and institutes have mostly been busy accommodating new programs and technologies and hence have not spent enough time to evaluate the CALL programs and technologies employed to find their affordances and limitations. The present study was an attempt ...
متن کاملMotor Affordances in the Home Environment for Children 18 to 42 Months: Impact of Socioeconomic Status, Rate of Sports Experience, and Level of Physical Activity of Parents
Introduction: Considering the importance of the multidimensional character of the home environment in developmental research, especially the motor development of children, the current study examines the effect of parents' socioeconomic status, sports experience rate, and the level of physical activity on the level of motor affordances. Method: The research method with a cross-sectional approach...
متن کاملOn possibilities for action: The past, present and future of affordance research
We give a historical overview of the development of almost 50 years of empirical research on the affordances in the past and in the present. Defined by James Jerome Gibson in the early development of the Ecological Approach to Perception and Action as the prime of perception and action, affordances have become a rich topic of investigation in the fields of human movement science and experimenta...
متن کاملIn Defense of the Direct Perception of Affordances
The field of functional recognition or affordance estimation from images has seen a revival in recent years. As originally proposed by Gibson, the affordances of a scene were directly perceived from the ambient light: in other words, functional properties like sittable were estimated directly from incoming pixels. Recent work, however, has taken a mediated approach in which affordances are deri...
